Baptisms at All Saints

Being baptised at All Saints

Baptism marks the beginning of a journey with God which continues for the rest of our lives, the first step in response to God’s love. God draws us into relationship with God and with God’s family, the Church. It’s a step that can be taken at any stage in life. It is a joyful moment when we rejoice in what God has done for us in Christ, make  promises about how we will follow Christ, and declare our faith together with the rest of the Christian community. At All Saints we rejoice with those who are making this step themselves, or are bringing their child to baptism, and we promise to support you now and in all the steps to come.

“As you pray for the candidates, picture them with yourself and the whole Church throughout the ages, journeying into the fullness of God’s love”

Why be baptised at All Saints?

At All Saints we strive to be a genuine community – God’s family in this place. As such we want to support you not only as you prepare for baptism, but in the years to come. Please be assured of our prayers for you or your child, as you prepare for baptism.

The sacrament of baptism is full of colour and symbolism. Candidates are signed with the cross; water is poured on the forehead as a sign of cleansing and renewal; they are anointed with oil; and given a candle, which represents the light of Christ.

Who can be baptised at All Saints?

We offer baptism to anyone who lives in our parish or otherwise has a strong connection to our parish or our church.

To check your local Parish Church you can enter your postcode here A Church Near You If you live outside our parish boundaries, we would want to explore with you why All Saints, rather than your local Parish church.

We want to get to know those who come to us for baptism, so that we can continue to support you in the years to come, so please come and join us at Mass on Sunday and introduce yourself afterwards.

The service paints many vivid pictures of what happens on the Christian way. There is the sign of the cross, the badge of faith in the Christian journey, which reminds us of Christ’s death for us. Our ‘drowning’ in the water of baptism, where we believe we die to sin and are raised to new life, unites us to Christ’s dying and rising, a picture that can be brought home vividly by the way the baptism is administered.

Water is also a sign of new life, as we are born again by water and the Spirit. This reminds us of Jesus’ baptism. And as a sign of that new life, there may be a lighted candle, a picture of the light of Christ conquering the darkness of evil. Everyone who is baptised walks in that light for the rest of their lives.

Confirmation

Confirmation marks the point in the Christian journey at which those who have already been baptised affirm for themselves their Christian faith, and at which, through prayer and the laying on of hands, the Church asks the Holy Spirit to empower them to live a life of committed discipleship.

If you are new to faith, are coming back to faith, or if you have never been confirmed, please speak to the vicar to explore if this is the next step for you.

There are annual confirmation classes appropriate for all ages – from teenagers to great grandparents.

What we offer

Baptism preparation for children and adults

We offer an annual cycle of preparation for adults who wish to explore baptism, and further opportunities to learn about the Christian faith. Where families are bringing children for baptism, there will be an opportunity for the adults of the family to reflect on what this step means for them and their child, and where the child is old enough there will be appropriate preparation for them too.

A welcoming community to support you and your family

We are delighted to welcome families to mass week by week. There will always be a place for you, whether you are coming in during the week to enjoy stay and play, or Little Fishes playgroup, to light a candle, or use the café.

Provision for children and families at services week by week

We have groups for children’s church, junior church and youth church, designed to engage them and help them to learn more about the Christian faith, and to worship as part of the Church. There are also opportunities for children who wish to participate further in the life of the church to serve, read, lead intercessions, and to receive communion after preparation. Find out more.
