Music at All Saints

Discover opportunities for singers, musicians, and music lovers of all ages to get involved at All Saints

Music at All Saints

All Saints is full of music throughout the week, sung and played in different styles by people of all ages. We believe that music, performed or listened to, is good for the soul, and there are plenty of ways for you to get involved.

All Saints has a rich musical tradition — an established Parish Choir, a growing Chorister programme, a thriving community choir, and one of the finest pipe organs in the south of England. We place a strong emphasis on musical development for singers of all ages and abilities, with a commitment to making high-quality musical education widely accessible.

There are also wonderful opportunities simply to listen: from our Choral Eucharist at 10am every Sunday to the concerts and performances we host throughout the year. See what’s coming up on our events calendar.

Parish Choir

The Parish Choir sings for the majority of choral services at All Saints, including the great feast days of Christmas and Easter. The repertoire ranges from earliest plainsong to newly composed works, and choir members are encouraged to follow the RSCM Voice for Life scheme to develop their musical abilities and understanding. Membership is by informal audition and trial period — the Director of Music is always happy to chat with interested singers. The choir rehearses on Friday evenings (6.30–8.30pm) and Sunday mornings (9am).

Chorister Programme

Our junior chorister programme is open to boys and girls aged 7–15. Choristers receive a rich musical education, including free singing lessons, theory tuition, and regular rehearsals, and sing in services at All Saints twice a month. There are opportunities to take singing grade exams and to perform at competitive music festivals. Auditions are open to all: we’re looking for team spirit, good conduct, and potential rather than polished technique. For more information on how to get involved, please contact the Director of Music.

Brighton Voices

We’re delighted to partner with Brighton Voices Community Choir, a friendly, non-auditioned ensemble whose weekly workshop-style rehearsals offer a supportive space to develop as a singer and prepare music for public performance. Brighton Voices’ concerts raise money for charitable causes connected to All Saints and the wider Brighton & Hove area. Rehearsals take place at All Saints on Wednesday evenings, 7.30–9.30pm. For more information, contact the Director of Music or visit the Brighton Voices website.

Concerts at All Saints

We host a wide variety of concerts throughout the year, from events organised by our own team to performances by local and international choirs and orchestras. Every summer, our Lunchtime Concert series brings a refreshing mix of classical and jazz to Thursday lunchtimes. We also regularly welcome performances from Brighton Festival Chorus, Sussex Symphony Orchestra, Brighton Orpheus Choir, Soul of the City Choir, the Choir With No Name, and many more. Check our events page for what’s coming up. All Saints is also available to hire as a concert venue.

Our Hill Pipe Organ

The pipe organ at All Saints was built in 1894 by William Hill & Son for the newly consecrated church. Originally a modest two-manual instrument, it was expanded to its current specification in 1905 when the east end of the church was completed, now comprising three manuals, pedals, 48 speaking stops, and around 3,000 pipes. The magnificent gothic organ case, enclosing the pipework in 1915, was designed by F. L. Pearson, son of the architect who designed All Saints itself.

Remarkably, no changes have been made to the organ since its installation, apart from routine cleaning, maintenance, and a full restoration in 1987, making it a completely intact example of a period instrument by one of Britain’s leading builders. It was among the first organs to receive a historic organ certificate from the British Institute of Organ Studies, recognised as being of international importance, and has informed the restoration of major Hill organs at Peterborough and Lichfield cathedrals and Eton College. You can hear it in action most Sundays, and at selected concerts and events.
