About Easter
The Great Fifty Days of Eastertide form a single festival period in which the tone of joy created at the Easter Vigil is sustained through the following seven weeks, and the Church celebrates the gloriously risen Christ. Tertullian calls this season the laetissimum spatium (this most joyful period). The Paschal Candle which was marked and lit at the Easter Vigil now stands prominently in church for all of the Eastertide services as a potent symbol of the triumph of resurrection love; and white or gold vestments and decorations emphasise the joy and brightness of the season. On the fortieth day we celebrate Christ’s ascension, where the disciples are commissioned to continue his work and the promise of the Holy Spirit is given. The arrival of the promise gift of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost completes and crowns the Easter Festival.
